The World Is A Better Place With You In It

May was Mental Health Awareness Month and as we step into June, I want to keep the conversation going.

I struggled with my mental health for years dealing with anxiety and an eating disorder that had their hands tightly fixed around my neck suffocating me from the inside out. But if you saw me, you would have never realized the internal battle I was fighting. As so many of us do, I put on a mask to the outside world to act like I was happy and that everything was "fine". But on the inside I felt stuck, lost and alone.

The more we can create consciousness, awareness and openness to the mental health crisis we are facing, and surround ourselves with supportive communities, the less power it holds, the less people will have to struggle in isolation and the less lives we will lose.

According to the CDC: Roughly 1 in every 5 Americans is currently living with a mental illness. Of those, the three most common diagnoses are:

  • anxiety disorders

  • depression

  • post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

According to Forbes article on 2023 Mental Health In The Workplace: Rates of burnout, anxiety and depression are at record levels.

Suicide is the:

  • 11th leading cause of death in the US in 2021

  • 2nd leading cause of death for people ages 10 to 34

  • 5th leading cause of death for people ages 35 to 54

The suicide rates in children are staggering. With social media pressures, beauty standards, bullying, discrimination and hate being spewed all over, it is so important to have real conversations with children and teenagers.

But, the first and most profound step adults can do to help children is to become consciously aware of your own inner dialogue and do the inner work you need to feel good mentally, physically and emotionally. In doing this, you can feel comfortable and confident being there for children, holding space and helping them process their emotions.

I can't stress enough that you MUST take care of yourself first in order to be able to take care of others.

THINGS THAT MAY LEAD TO MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES:

  • childhood trauma

  • trauma

  • abuse

  • death of a loved one

  • death of a pet

  • lack of community

  • becoming a new parent

  • bullying (race, weight, gender, disability)

  • illnesses

  • a break up

  • divorce

  • aging

  • puberty

I've come to realize that we all wear masks to the outside world, put on a happy face to act like everything is "fine" and distract ourselves with food, alcohol, drugs, social media, video games, social events, etc. But those that look like they have the perfect "happy" life are often the ones struggling the most.
